The Founder's Travel Awards

Tom Bruice, William P. Jencks, and Myron Bender founded the Winter Enzyme Mechanisms Conference in 1969 for fostering collegial interactions within the community of chemists and biochemists interested in understanding the chemical basis for enzymatic catalysis and the regulation of enzyme action.

To ensure the vibrancy of this community that the Founders have helped to create, the "Founder's Travel Awards" have been instituted to support the participation of students and/or post-docs at meetings of the Winter Enzyme Mechanisms Conference. The endowment for this award is administered by the ACS Biological Chemistry Division, who will manage the investment of the contributed funds.

Award: The award recipient will give a 25 minute oral presentation of their research at the conference.  The award consists of reimbursement of up to $2000 for travel to the conference, registration, and hotel, and a plaque to commemorate the achievement.

Eligibility: Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who received their Ph.D. during the four years prior to the conference where the award is presented.

Nomination Procedures for the Founder's Travel Award

1)  Senior research advisors may nominate a graduate student or postdoctoral fellow by sending a nomination letter that describes the candidate’s qualities which merit recognition by this award. The nominee’s CV should be included with the nomination letter, as well as a copy of the poster abstract that describes the research that they intend to present at the Award lecture. Advisors are strongly encouraged to cover the travel expenses for unsuccessful nominees. Nomination letters should be emailed to kschwartz@enzymemechanismsconference.org.  Please use the subject line “Founder’s Travel Award nomination.”

The deadline for receiving applications for the Founder’s Travel Award is October 1, 2008.

2) Nominees should submit an application to attend the 2009 Winter Enzyme Mechanisms Conference.

If you wish to contribute to the endowment to support the "Founder's Travel Awards" please make out your contributions to the "ACS Biological Chemistry Division, Founder's Travel Award" and send this contribution to:
